He was involved in various clubs and activities, including SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers), Salt Company, Pi Tau Sigma and also worked as a research assistant and supplemental instruction instructor. Lowell received Outstanding Graduating Senior award after being nominated by faculty.

Lowell took an opportunity in the summer of 2010 to participate in a 2-month study abroad program focused on engineering topics. He learned some German, met some lifelong friends, and traveled Europe on the weekends learning about European history and culture. Little did he know, but the Hochschule Mannheim was right next-door to John Deere Mannheim, the company he would work for after college, and he would be back in that area many times for work.
